Fat Transfer to the Face
For those that are looking to defy the signs of aging, this is a life changing procedure. As one ages, the effects of gravity take effect. Skin tends to sag and become more loose as the collagen reduces with age. There tends to be a loss of volume throughout the face as we age. There are temporary options to solve these problems, that include fillers like Juvaderm, Sculptra, Restylane, Radiesse or Perlane. These fillers are good for younger individuals because very little is needed to accomplish the goal. Unfortunately, as you get older, you will require larger amounts and the cost can get overwhelming since they are temporary.
With the fat transfer to the face, we can replace lost volume with fat and rejuvenate your face to the volume you once had when you were younger. The results are amazing and will make you look years younger in a short period of time. Loss of fat in the face is a sure tell that you are aging. The bags under the eyes, the loss of volume along the cheek bone and along the jaw bone are the most common places for loss of volume. With fat transfer, we are able to add volume to just about any area of your face to restore the look that you are trying to accomplish.
With the increased volume in the face, the wrinkles will literally disappear almost immediately. When you loose volume, the wrinkles are much more prominent and show your age. The expansion of the the volume in a given area will stretch the skin and alleviate the wrinkles.
The face will be marked to determine the specific area you wish to treat. This will be our outline and plan of action for injecting the fat into the face. Next, the area for harvesting the fat will be identified and marked. After the area has been cleaned, tiny puncture holes will be made in the harvest area and numbing fluid will be injected. Once proper numbing is accomplished a special cannula will be used to harvest the fat to be transferred. The fat will then be processed and prepared for transfer. Prior to transferring fat, the face will be properly numbed to assure a comfortable process. Finally, the prepared fat will then be injected into the chosen area.
The use of your own fat is the safest and most efficient way to restore volume in the face. The fat that is transferred is considered permanent and will look and feel very natural. Some of the fat cells that are transferred will not survive as the body needs to create new blood supplies to nourish the new fat. Because of this, there will be some initial loss, but after 3 months the results are considered permanent. Depending on the look desired, it may be necessary to get multiple injections to get it right.
Following the procedure, you will be swollen and potentially bruised for approximately 10-15 days. In this time period you may not feel comfortable in crowds or public places. There is not a significant amount of pain, but with the swelling, you probably won’t feel entirely comfortable. This should not inhibit one from performing their job if they don’t mind people seeing them with a swollen face.
The fat that is transferred is your fat, so there is no way that your body will reject it. Nor is it possible that you would have an allergic reaction. Once the fat is transferred, your body will create a new blood supply to the fat to incorporate the fat naturally. The area will feel like your normal face, just fuller. The fat is your own, so it will feel just like other areas of your body. Since the entire procedure will be performed under local anesthesia, you will walk out of our office and feel good afterwards. The area treated will be swollen, but numb for up to 24 hours.
- My face looks too full.
This is normal and common after the initial injection. You will be swollen initially so you will feel larger. The swelling will go down in time.
- My cheeks feel very firm and hard
This is normal after the injection of fat. It will feel hard in the area injected following the procedure, but it will go away in a few weeks.
- My chin feels lumpy inside my mouth
This is normal and is simply the fat clustering between the other tissue. This will go away in a few weeks as the body accommodates the new fat.
- My face looks uneven or asymmetrical
This is normal and is due to swelling. Some of the areas may swell more than others which will make it look asymmetric.
- My lips look too thin
This is normal and will go away.
- My lines around my mouth look deeper
This is not common, but is a normal occurance. It will go away in a few weeks as the swelling diminishes.
- I can’t smile normally, or it is hard for me to smile
This is due to the increased volume and swelling, it’s normal and will improve as the swelling goes down and your body get’s used to the new volumes.
- I am swelling more after 2 days
Swelling is expected after this procedure. The question is how much. This will vary from individual as well as the extent of the areas treated. So if you have more areas treated, it is likely that you will be more swollen.
- I look like a Neanderthal
Again, because of the swelling, it will look odd for the first few weeks until the swelling decreases and the fat is accepted.
- My swelling changes to better and worse from day to day
The swelling will vary throughout the day depending on your activity level, so it is normal for you to notice the changes. In time all of the swelling will go away, but it takes time and is different for each individual.
Fat transfer to the face is a permanent solution to lost volume of the face. Many people use fillers such as Juvaderm, Sculptra, Restylane, Radiesse or Perlane to add volume to areas of their face. All of these fillers are considered temporary and require ongoing injections to maintain the results. The cost of these fillers range from $400-$1500 per treatment and will last approximately 4-6 months. There is also limitations as to the volume that is used to inject since one is charged per milliliter of filler. With fat transfer, the volume is limited only by the amount of fat that one has for transferring.
For the younger cost conscious individual, it may make sense to use these fillers. But in the long run, the cost is significantly lower with the use of fat. The initial investment is higher for fat transfer, but you should only require a single injection. Whereas using fillers will require ongoing injections every 4-6 months.
For the older patient that requires a much higher volume of fillers, it is definitely cheaper to get the fat transfer to the face. With fat, there is no limit as to how much can be transferred.
